After studying for a degree in History at the University of Bristol (1966 – 1969), Rob undertook post-graduate research into the Labour Movement in Bristol, 1910 – 1939 and was awarded an M. Litt in 1979. He taught at schools in the Bristol and Bath areas and until recently Rob also worked as an A level examiner. He co-authored a Historical Association pamphlet in 1973 on the Bristol Trades Council and also co-authored a pamphlet on the history of Bristol South East Labour Party in 1978. In 1983 Rob contributed a chapter on the trade union movement in Bristol to Bristol’s Other History (Bristol Broadsides pub.) Since retiring from teaching he has authored A level textbooks on The Extension of the Franchise, 1830-1931, (Heinemann 2000) Germany 1848-1914 (Heinemann 2001), Weimar and Nazi Germany 1919-1945 (OUP 2016) and The Transformation of China 1936-1997 (OUP 2016).
