Articles: Material For Schools

This website provides free online teaching resources for schools and colleges based on recent historical research in the south west. The first of these collections of materials is now available. The Refusing to Kill project focuses on World War 1 conscientious objectors to military service in the Bristol area. It launched at the end of June 2020, although the materials will expand over time.

The resources include primary material, links to secondary sources, sample lessons, ideas and information cards. They will be added to over the course of the project.

Future collections of free teaching resources are planned, including historical studies of workhouses, slavery and environmentalism.

The Resources

The online resources include material for primary and secondary school or college and are relevant to a range of subjects (in particular, history, religious education, citizenship, the humanities more generally and may provide the basis of project work). Resources include PPT presentations for lessons, history cards containing background information and individual stories as well as primary sources (such as photos, newspapers, newsletters, leaflets, audio oral history, and letters and sketches) as well as links to secondary sources (including papers, books and pamphlets, audio and video of history talks, walks and historical recreations) and to external websites. Resources will be added to over the course of the project, including we hope more lesson ideas and examples of pupils’ work. Talks (online or in person) by the historians who conducted the research are also offered.

The Researchers

The resources are based on the work of Bristol’s Bristol Radical History Group (BRHG) along with its sister organisations Countering Colston and the Remembering The Real World War 1 Group (RRWW1). The researchers include: Dr Roger Ball, UWE; Professor June Hannam, UWE; Dr Mike Richardson, UWE; Colin Thomas, documentary film-maker and author; Professor Lois Bibbings, University of Bristol.
