We are very pleased to have Ian Bild<\/strong> a founding member of the influential Bristol Broadsides<\/strong> and the cast, researchers and organisers of the recent Haunting Ashton Court<\/strong> project speaking and performing at M Shed.<\/p>\n

Bristol Broadsides<\/strong> was a non-profit making publishing co-operative founded in 1977. Its aims were best summed up by the Hut Writers from the Southmead council estate in their book Corrugated Ironworks<\/em>:<\/p>\n

For too long we\u2019ve been sitting back, complacently accepting everything that has been thrown at us. Now we\u2019ve been able to say what we think through (our) poems and stories.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The publishing co-operative ran a number of writers\u2019 and history workshops, often under the auspices of the Workers\u2019 Education Association. As well as in Southmead, there were groups meeting regularly in Knowle West, Hartcliffe and Easton.<\/p>\n

The writing and memories of local people, not usually heard, were published in, amongst other titles: Shush Mum\u2019s Writing<\/em>, Looking Back on Bristol \u2013 Hartcliffe People Remember, Up Knowle West, Corrugated Ironworks<\/em> and Bristol Writes. <\/em><\/p>\n

Bristol Broadsides also published individual autobiographies such as: Our Joyce<\/em>, by Joyce Storey, Tales of the Rails, <\/em>by Ernie Ross, Arthur & Me \u2013 Docker\u2019s Children<\/em>, by Joe Barnes, City Pit \u2013 Memoirs of a Speedwell Miner, <\/em>by Fred Moss and Toby \u2013 A Bristol Tramp Tells his Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Bristol\u2019s radical tradition was recounted in two further publications: Bristol\u2019s Other History<\/em> and Placards and Pin Money. <\/em>These contained researched articles including much oral history.<\/p>\n

Bristol Broadsides was an active member of the Federation of Worker Writers and Community Publishers which included a variety of groups from all over the country. The wealth of material that emerged nationally pointed to, as described by Ken Worpole \u2013 one of the Federation\u2019s founding members \u2013 \u201ca recapture of stolen cultural territory\u201d.<\/p>\n

Haunting Ashton Court – LIVE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Join us for performance and lively discussion connected to the recently published book Haunting Ashton Court: A Creative Handbook for Collective History-Making<\/i><\/b><\/a>, inspired by a community youth theatre project that took place at the mansion across Winter 2022. The event will include\u00a0performances from a company of young Bristolians<\/b>\u00a0responding to the gaps and silences in the official archives of Ashton Court Estate, followed by\u00a0a panel Q&A with the young people<\/b>\u00a0involved, chaired by the community project\u2019s facilitators Elinor Lower<\/strong> and Jack Young.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There will be copies of\u00a0Haunting Ashton Court: A Creative Handbook for Collective History-Making<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/i>available for sale. This collection includes new writing commissions from Zakiya McKenzie, Tom Marshman and Saili Katebe responding to the gaps in the Ashton Court archives, a script from a live performance by young Bristolians; and a creative toolkit to help you make your own journeys into collective history-making, edited by Elinor Lower and Jack Young.<\/p>\n
