Author of several books including The Way Madness Lies: The Asylum and Beyond (Thames and Hudson, 2016), The Atmosphere of Heaven: The Unnatural Experiments of Doctor Beddoes and His Sons (2009), The Unfortunate Colonel Despard (2004) and The Air Loom Gang: The Strange and True Story of James Tilly Matthews and His Visionary Madness (2003). Currently researching radical Bristol in the 1790’s.
